What Is Bergamot?

Bergamot is a citrus fruit with a unique aroma that’s equal parts bright and soothing. You might recognize it as the signature scent in Earl Grey tea — but on your skin, it does much more than smell amazing.


The Skin Benefits of Bergamot

1. Purifying & Balancing

Bergamot has natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it an ideal ingredient in an evening cleanser or serum. It helps purify the skin, reduce excess oil, and calm the look of blemishes without stripping your skin’s natural moisture.

  • One 2018 study reported that bergamot essential oil significantly inhibited pathogens like P. aeruginosa, E. coli, S. epidermidis, and S. pyogenes, with MIC values ranging from 2–8 mg/mL and corresponding bactericidal concentrations — making it a great ally for breakout-prone skin.

2. Brightening & Tone-Refining

Bergamot has also been studied for its skin-brightening potential. Its active compounds may help improve the appearance of uneven skin tone, working in harmony with ingredients like retinol to reduce the visibility of dark spots and discoloration.

3. Aromatherapy Relaxation

Evening skincare is as much about mindset as it is about moisture. Bergamot is widely used in aromatherapy for its ability to reduce stress and promote a sense of calm — making it a beautiful addition to your nighttime ritual.

  • A clinical study (2015) involving 41 healthy female participants found that inhaling bergamot essential oil significantly lowered salivary cortisol, helped reduce negative emotions and fatigue, and increased parasympathetic nervous system activity (associated with relaxation).
  • In a 2017 pilot study, inhaling bergamot oil for just 15 minutes in a waiting-room setting improved participants’ positive mood, compared to a control group.
